Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is an injection based therapy that is regenerative in nature, it is also referred to as Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT).

This type of therapy treats both acute (short term) and chronic (long term) musculoskeletal pain. The ligaments and tendons surrounding joints are typically where the injection is performed.images

The injection is comprised of dextrose (sugar), water and an anesthetic. Once injected there is a purposeful, local inflammatory response. This stimulates the body to increase collagen production in the area. The result is stronger tissue, faster recovery and a decrease in pain.

Often times, the approach for treating musculoskeletal pain focuses on reducing inflammation and suppressing pain (with drugs, for example). To obtain long term relief however, the root cause of the pain must be treated and this is where prolotherapy shines! Prolotherapy can directly affect weakened tissue, make it stronger and set up the body for long term relief.

The advantage of prolotherapy is stability. Because the injection stimulates the body to produce more (and stronger) tissue, joints can can become more stable and often times that leads to permanent pain reduction.

Prolotherapy is considered one of the most advanced therapies available today for repairing damaged tissues and it can help with many types of pain and injury:

  • tendonitis
  • torn ligaments
  • joint pain (shoulder pain, knee pain)
  • spinal joint pain (neck pain, mid- and lower-back pain)
  • Achilles injury
  • arthritis
  • and much more

Prolotherapy is performed by Dr. Shaun Riddle, our Naturopathic Doctor. He has been performing prolotherapy longer than most people in the province of Alberta, over 15 years! In fact, Dr. Riddle is an Instructor and teaches other Doctors how to perform this very therapeutic service.
